A PricewaterhouseCoopers report found a positive link between workplace wellness programmes and improved business key performance indicators. The PwC report led many organisations to implement a wellness programme after noticing: an increasing age of the workforce, rising costs of chronic disease and ill-health, external pressures from Government, corporate and social responsibility, and competition. They identified the greatest financial benefits of implementing wellness plans came from cost savings – including 45% reduction in sickness absence, and 18% reduction in staff turnover. i

The 2016 CIPD Absence Management survey identified the most common top five causes of short term (up to four weeks) absence were ii:

  • 95% minor illness (colds, flu, stomach upset, headaches, migraines)
  • 47% stress
  • 44% musculoskeletal injuries (neck strains, repetitive strain, excluding back pain)
  • 35% home/family/carer responsibility
  • 34% mental ill health (clinical depression and anxiety)

The most common long term (four weeks or more) causes of absence were :

  • 53% stress
  • 53% acute medical conditions (stroke, heart attack, cancer)
  • 49% mental ill health (clinical depression and anxiety)
  • 44% musculoskeletal injuries (neck strains, repetitive strains, not back pain)
  • 35% back pain
