Prostate health – the signs

The prostate is a small gland, the size of a walnut, and it tends to become larger with age.

Prostate health is unfortunately still considered a “taboo” subject, but I hope after reading this article or attending my Men’s Health webinar it will become clear how common prostate conditions can be, and what the signs and symptoms are of the various prostate conditions.

Enlarged prostate

1 in 3 men over 50 will have symptoms of prostate enlargement. The increase in size is not caused by cancer and it doesn’t increase your risk of developing prostate cancer.

The symptoms of an enlarged prostate are;

  • difficulty starting or stopping urinating
  • weak flow of urine
  • feel like incomplete emptying of the urine
  • need to urinate more frequently
  • waking through the night to urinate

Prostatitis

This is where the prostate gland becomes swollen likely due to an infection. The symptoms are similar to an enlarged prostate and may also include pain when urinating, pain in the pelvis, lower back, or genitals.

Prostate cancer

1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer.

The risks factors include; if you’re over 50, or you’re black, or your dad or brother had it you’re at higher risk.

The signs and symptoms can be similar to other prostate conditions like prostatitis or enlarged prostate so it’s important to speak to your Doctor and run some tests.

Not all of the following tests may be performed. They may include;

  • provide a urine sample in a pot
  • prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test
  • digital rectal examination

The sooner you have a conversation with your Doctor the better the outcome. Please speak to your Doctor if you notice any of the symptoms listed in this article.

Please also contact us info@natural-alternative.co.uk if you would like further information about Men’s Health webinar/seminar at your workplace to help raise awareness and normalise the conversation around prostate health.
