Men’s Health Roadmap

Men’s health. Why can it be challenging to engage men in their health & wellbeing?

  • Infrequent Doctor appointments
  • Uncomfortable admitting illness?
  • Belief things will work out OK?

The top 3

The top three areas of health concern for men are;

Heart, prostate, mental health.

Heart Health
Heart disease remains one of the leading health concerns for men. Diets high in saturated fats, trans fats, and sugars can lead to high cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Incorporating heart-healthy foods such as fatty fish (rich in omega-3 fatty acids), nuts, seeds, and plenty of fruits and vegetables can significantly lower cholesterol and reduce these risks.

Prostate Health
What are the signs to look out for? Men should be particularly mindful of their prostate health as they age. Waking to urinate in the night, urinary hesitation, feelings of incomplete emptying, aching/pain in the lower back or groin area. Speak to the Doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. You will usually be asked to provide a urine sample and do a blood test. This NHS webpage is particularly helpful.

Mental Health
“It’s never the right time.” This was the reason many men gave in a recent study on their mental health. Trouble sleeping or waking during the night when everyone is asleep may be the time when talking would be helpful. Being familiar with workplace EAP contact details at any time to talk and have someone listen.

Why is nutrition important?

Nutrition plays a critical role men’s health – heart, prostate, and mental health. Studies have shown that diets rich in nutrients can help;

Eat a Variety of Foods
A diverse diet ensures that you receive all the necessary vitamins and minerals. Aim to include a range of colourful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Focus on Lean Proteins
Protein is essential for muscle growth and repair. Choose lean sources such as chicken, turkey, fish, beans, lentils, and low-fat dairy. Aim for a balanced intake of protein at each meal to promote a feeling of fullness.

Incorporate Healthy Fats
Not all fats are created equal. Healthy fats from sources like fish, avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are beneficial for heart health. Limit saturated fats found in fried foods, processed snacks, and fatty cuts of meat.

Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration is often overlooked. Drinking enough water throughout the day is vital for maintaining energy levels, supporting metabolism, and enhancing physical performance. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, more if you are active.

Limit Added Sugars and salt
High sugar and salt intake can lead to various health issues, including obesity and high blood pressure. Be mindful of processed foods, which often contain hidden sugars and excessive salt. Choose whole, minimally processed foods whenever possible.
