Longevity: unlocking a longer, healthier life

Exciting times. Science, nutrition, and technology are coming together to help us with longevity – living longer and healthier lives.

Longevity is no longer just about adding more candles to your birthday cake. It’s about making smart changes to your lifestyle, nutrition, and environment to optimise how your body and mind age.

A client organisation recently requested a webinar on “biohacking longevity. I found the research so inspiring that I wanted to share some of it with you in this blog.

Here’s a peek into some of the Biohacking Longevity webinar content:

What is biohacking longevity?

Biohacking is the practice of using nutritional strategies, lifestyle upgrades, and sometimes even technology to improve your health. When applied to longevity, the goal is to support brain and body health, and increase your number of years in good health.

Core nutrition strategies of longevity biohacking

  1. Mediterranean / Blue Zone diets

Emphasis on whole foods (minimising ultra-processed foods), more plant-based eating (doesn’t have to mean becoming vegetarian/vegan), using olive oil drizzled over food.

  1. Intermittent Fasting / Time Restricted eating

The fascinating effect that fasting has on cell autophagy (improving the effectiveness of cell death when the cell becomes defective), and improving how sensitive we become to insulin thereby helping to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

  1. Protein quantity

Finding the right balance for you in terms of amount and source of protein – balancing animal and plant sources for muscle optimisation (which helps to reduce obesity, heart disease, and risk of falls).

  1. Plant diversity

Appreciation of the growing evidence of plant fibre as food for the microbiome (good bacteria) in your gut. Diversity through 30 plant sources per week feeds the bacteria, assisting them to produce short-chain fatty acids (which improve digestive wall integrity, mental health, immunity etc..)

  1. Healthy fats

Lots of research on omega-3, monounsaturated fats, and reducing saturated fats to improve heart health, mental health, reducing inflammatory health conditions.

  1. Smart carbs

Understanding carbohydrates through use of the Glycaemic-Index to provide swaps that better match your daily requirements. And for the carb lovers, how to create resistant starch.
